To diy or not to diy…
There is something so special and amazing about DIY projects. They are a personal and creative expression. They can add personality and character to your wedding. But many DIY projects can overwhelm even the most organized and craftiest brides. In that case, I have two suggestions: either start early (like this bride did) or go all out with the DIY for your engagement shoot and scale back for the wedding.
From the bride-to-be:
How did you decide on your DIY projects?
We wanted to create a wedding theme that reflected our love of nature, art and romance. A vintage/shabby chic theme was picked because it will allow us to constantly be creative and also incorporates the things we love. By choosing unique items and props from antique, thrift and consignment stores, you can create your own wedding theme that will be unlike anyone else’s. Art supplies are equally as important as they will help you transform items with ease and really make something one of a kind.
Each DIY project made was designed to fit our style and our sensible budget! By using items found around the house and basic art supplies the possibilities are endless!
Will you share how each one is made?
Our wooden “Love” sign was a blank piece of wood but with a DIY stencil and white paint it became an easy photo prop or decoration for the wedding.
Our “Love Her” and “Love Him” signs were printed on card stock and embellished with scrapbook paper, glitter spray and two pieces of wood.
My “Daisy Bouquet” stems were wrapped in jute twine and completed with a bow.
My “Hair-bow” was brown lace that was tied in a bow with a bobby pin slipped through the back side of the bow. The wire stem of a faux pink rose was then wrapped around the center of the bow and tucked behind.
Our “Save the Date” sign was created by printing the numbers in purple and then cutting them out. We used a hot glue gun to adhere the jute twine to the back of the numbers creating our free flowing sign!
Creating a variety of handmade items will allow us greater creativity and give our special day a personal touch.
Are you doing any DIY for the wedding?
For our wedding the following items will be hand-designed:
- Save the Dates and Wedding Programs
- Chair decorations for ceremony
- Ring-bearer pillow and flower-girl basket
- Tea light candles in vintage jars to hang from trees
- Place Cards clothes-pinned to jute twine
- Family timeline
- Card box
- DIY photo booth
- Photography props
- Decorative disposable cameras that will be collected and uploaded to a website known by the attendees
We may add or subtract any of these ideas as our planning progresses.
OMG! How are you staying organized?
Our binder contains 24 tabs full of organized ideas, plans, dates and dreams. Each of these ideas are as important to us as the next while we continue on our path together. Our best strategy thus far has been learning to go with the flow. If there is something that does not work one way try it another. If it will not work at all then let it go. As long as there is love between us that is all we truly need!
Thanks so much for sharing this lovely engagement session with us!
